The headlining figure was biomethane production for 2022 in the EU-27; 4.2 bcm (around 44 TWh) which represented a 20% increase on the 2021 value (3.5 bcm). For the specific case of Bio-LNG (liquified biomethane), production capacity increased by 40%, albeit from a lower base (from 1.0 TWh/yr in 2021).

Biogas (non-upgraded) usage also had gains, although relative increases in production were modest. Nevertheless, the total energy production of biogas and biomethane (21 bcm) exceeded the demand for Poland, the sixth largest market (by inland consumption) in the EU-27.

Also,a focus area was digestate as an organic fertiliser, strengthening the closed-loop concept where agriculture can be both a feedstock supplier and a consumer of biomethane co-products. The potential of digestate to replace synthetic fertilisers can further reduce emissions.

There were few references to Guarantees of Origin (GO) in the report, namely the commitment of the 

 to the concept (Article 19) and the uneven progress of implementation of gas GOs in various member states. We would expect that the report next year would comment more upon GO registers, as well as the 

 (UDB) as these key schemes encouraging cross-border transactions develop.

A poll of the attendees suggested more than half had three years or less experience in the field – the rapid rise of newcomers, in addition to the significant gap to the 2030 target suggests a flurry of activity lies ahead.
